Sands of time keep memory
alive
In a landmark opportunity, all
Australians will be able to own authentic sand from ANZAC Cove
following today's national launch of the Sands of Gallipoli collection
by the Returned & Services League of Australia.
Surrounded by descendents of Galliopli veterans,
Australia's bestselling author Bryce Courtenay AM, today launched
the Sands of Gallipoli collection in Sydney with RSL National
President Major General Bill Crews AO.
Major General Crews said purchasing an item from
the collection of lapel pins, key rings, medallions and wall plaques
each containing grains of authentic sand recently collected from
ANZAC Cove, could be the first and possibly only opportunity for
Australians to own a precious piece of preserved ANZAC history.
"In the lead up to ANZAC Day, this collection
reminds us of the bravery, determination and sacrifices of Australian
service men and women.
"The collection celebrates the Australian spirit
shown by those who fought on the sands of Gallipoli and all those
who have follwed. These were ordinary people who gave extraordinary
service," Major General Crews said.
"We can never forget the sacrifices they made.
These items provide a lasting reminder of battles lost and honour
won."
Bestselling author of The Power of One and The Potato
Factory, Bryce Courtenay, said the collection was particularly
important to him because of his involvement in An ANZAC's Story.
The book was one of six published under the $8m
federal government 'Books Alive' initiative which saw Courtenay
edit and introduce the memoirs of WWI soldier Roy Kyle.
Sales of the Sands of Gallipoli collection will
assist the Returned & Services League of Australia to continue
its vital work caring for the veteran, ex-service and service
community.
Major General Crews said the collection would appeal
to all Australians.
"Every year, young and old make the trip to
visit Gallipoli on ANZAC day for the dawn service. It's one of
the most inspiring, thought-provoking, memorable journeys any
Australian can make," Major General Crews said.
"For many people who've been there and for
those who can't make the journey, this collection is something
we can all treasure and pass down through the generations."
The collection is available for sale from participating
Australia Post outlets and RSL Sub Branches throughout Australia.
Prices range from $10 for the lapel pin to $60 for the plaque
