LIGHT HORSEMAN DELIVERS
GALLIPOLI SANDS TO QUEENSLAND
Brisbane students today experienced Great War history
when a rider dressed as a World War 1 Light Horseman brought memories
of Gallipoli to Toowong State School.
200 students watched the rider from the Queensland
Mounted Infantry Historical Troop deliver the 2005 Sands of Gallipoli
collection to State President of the Returned & Services League,
Mr Bill Mason.
The special anniversary Sands of Gallipoli collection
consists of lapel pins, key rings, medallions, teaspoons and plaques
which contain authentic sand from ANZAC Cove. The collection was
first introduced in Queensland in 2003 and this year commemorates
90 years since the landings at Gallipoli.
"The RSL is pleased to support the Sands of
Gallipoli initiative and receive a 12.5% donation from all sales
of the 2005 products", said Mr Mason. "These funds will
support the RSL's ongoing welfare work in the veteran community."
Last year the collection contributed approximately
$150,000 to the RSL nationwide and it is anticipated this year's
contribution will exceed that with public support.
Trooper Daryl Welsh and his horse, Tex, also showed
students manoeuvers the Great War diggers and their horses performed
in battle 90 years ago.
Daryl's grandfather served overseas in the Light
Horse during World War One and his father was in New Guinea during
the Second World War. During his 15 years in the Queensland Mounted
Infantry Historical Troop, Daryl has escorted the Queen and Prince
Charles.
Toowong State School is one of Queensland's oldest
schools and is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Former students
fought and died in the 1914 - 1918 War.
The Sands of Gallipoli collection is made by Market
Link Solutions and is available from participating Australia Post
retail outlets and RSL Sub Branches.
