Light
Horse deliver Sands
Seven riders, dressed as 1914 - 1918 Light Horse soldiers handed
over the 2005 Sands of Gallipoli collection to the RSL National
President, Major General Bill Crews during a recent ceremony in
Sydney.
The special anniversary Sands of Gallipoli collection
consists of lapel pins, key rings, medallions, teaspoons and plaques
which contain authentic sand from ANZAC Cove. This year's collection
commemorates 90 years since the landings at Gallipoli.
The Light Horse Troopers are members of the Australian
Light Horse Association and keep alive the traditions of the Australian
Light Horse regiments of the First World War. They were joined
by 100 primary school students and a 70-strong choir in the simple
but dignified hand-over ceremony.
Between now and ANZAC DAY community newspapers are
running the "Bringing the Spirit Home" competitions
to encourage readers to share their family wartime stories.
The best story will receive a limited edition set
of six medallions depicting the battles of at Gallipoli. The set
and other 2005 Sands of Gallipoli items are available through
participating Australia Post retail outlets.
A 12.5% donation from Sands of Gallipoli sales goes
to the RSL to support its ongoing welfare work in the veteran
community. Last year the Sands of Gallipoli collection contributed
approximately $150,000 to the RSL nationwide
